Copenhagen Business School invites applications for a vacant PhD scholarship within the field of Digitalization and with a focus on AI in Management and Business Education.
Core research areas of the Department of Digitalization are Information Systems and Data Science.
It is the ambition of the Department to bring together scholars who share a common interest in the study of digitalization in context, specifically focusing on co-creating knowledge with enduring consequences through the study of interrelationships and processes connecting people, data and digital technology. The core research areas of the department evolve around the disciplines and topics of Information Systems and Data Science. Faculty often engage with emergent topics and phenomena where digital technologies entangle with new individual, organizational and/or societal processes and practices.
Teaching responsibilities of the Department comprise undergraduate and graduate teaching in aspects of digitalization. The department provides research-based education in digitalization, covering both business and technical perspectives.
This PhD project will focus on AI in Management and Business Education, with particular interest in how business schools can develop meaningful, engaging and future-oriented learning environments in the context of AI and broader societal change.
Artificial intelligence, and particularly generative AI, represents both a new competence area and a challenge to existing educational assumptions and practices. The increasing availability and use of AI raises important questions about what students should learn, how learning processes can be supported, and how teaching, assessment and curriculum design may need to evolve. At the same time, these developments make existing limitations in higher education more visible, particularly in relation to transmission-oriented teaching formats and questions of meaningful student participation and engagement.
These developments intersect with broader changes in organizations and society, where employers increasingly call for graduates who can navigate complexity, collaborate across differences, think critically, and engage responsibly and reflexively with technological tools.
The PhD project may explore educational innovation in business schools, including new teaching formats, learning activities and pedagogical approaches that support active participation, collaboration, reflection and engagement in AI-rich learning environments. Relevant areas of inquiry may include:
- Sustainable and transparent generative AI applications for higher education using small and large language models
- the implications of AI for learning processes, classroom interaction and the role of educators;
- changing employer expectations and future-oriented graduate capabilities;
- innovative pedagogies that support engagement, collaboration, reflexivity and responsible use of AI;
- new forms of teaching, assessment and feedback in AI-rich learning environments;
- students' development of critical and responsible AI literacies;
- the design of inclusive, motivating and participatory learning environments;
- implications for business school strategy and leadership.
The PhD project is expected to contribute both to research on business education and to the continued development of educational practices within business schools and higher education more broadly. The Department is particularly interested in research that connects the study of AI and digitalization with organizational, managerial and societal perspectives.
The three-year PhD programme at CBS gives you the opportunity to conduct research under the supervision of CBS’s associate professors and professors, supported by research related PhD courses. The programme is highly international, and you are expected to participate in international research conferences and to spend time at another research institution as a visiting PhD student. Application and admission requirements
The department will give priority to applicants with high grades from their universities.
To be considered, the applicant must
- have completed a two-year (120 ECTS) master's level and a three-year (180 ECTS) bachelor’s level degrees (corresponding to the 3 + 2 Bologna process)
- have received the grade of at least 10 (or equivalent) for the master's thesis according to the Danish 7-point grading scale (https://ufsn.dk/english/education/the-danish-education-system/grading-system/)
- have a weighted grade point average of at least 8.2 on the Danish 7-point grading scale for the bachelor's and master's degree combined, or alternatively a weighted grade point average of at least 9.5 for the master's degree alone. If the grade point average is not met, documentation for being in the top 40% of the class is also accepted.
- have an educational background in the social sciences
- have completed the master's programme before starting the PhD programme at CBS
- master academic English at a high level in writing and speaking

- a presentation of an original research question
- a description of the initial theoretical framework and method
- a presentation of the proposed empirical material
- an expected contribution
- a work plan for the three years

Employment and salary
A PhD scholarship runs for a period of three years, and includes teaching obligations corresponding to 416 work hours. The scholarships are fully salaried positions, according to the national Danish collective agreement. The monthly salary is currently approximately DKK 31,000 up to DKK 37,000 depending on seniority and a pension contribution totalling 18,07 %. The scholarship includes tuition fees, office space, course and travel costs (according to the current CBS agreement).
Salary level and employment take place in accordance with the Ministry of Finance's agreement with the Academics' Central Organization.
Recruitment procedure
The Recruitment Committee shortlists at least two-five applicants to be assessed by the Assessment Committee. Applicants are informed whether their application has proceeded for assessment.
Applicants selected for assessment will be notified about the composition of the Assessment Committee and will receive their personal assessment later. Selected applicants will be invited for an interview. Please note that a positive assessment does not automatically result in an interview. Once the recruitment process is completed each applicant will be notified of the outcome of their application.
