Copenhagen Business School invites applications for a vacant Postdoc in the Cultural Analysis of Science Fiction in Robotics at the Department of Management, Society and Communication.

MSC is looking for a Postdoc to join the Operative Fictions project funded under the DFF Sapere Aude funding scheme, which explores the role of popular culture genres in organizational and entrepreneurial contexts.

MSC brings together scholars from a range of research areas within management, communication and the broader social sciences and humanities, studying organizations in global environments and the interaction and interdependencies of business, society and government. They share a common interest in studying organizations in global environments and the relations of organizations to the wider society. MSC is a significant supplier of research-based teaching to a broad portfolio of programs, which includes undergraduate, graduate and doctoral teaching and supervision as well as executive education in the fields of:

  • Responsible management, leadership and governance
  • Corporate responsibility and sustainability
  • Business and development (with an emphasis on the emerging/growth economies context)
  • Organisational communication (corporate communication, strategic communication, leadership communication, marketing communication, international business communication)

In this position, our new colleague will build on past and ongoing work to advance knowledge about the role of science fiction, as a popular culture genre, in the field of robotics. Our new colleague will work in close collaboration with the PI and empirically explore the ways in which various stakeholders in the field of robotics mobilize science fiction to make sense of their professional work, future technology development and entrepreneurial possibilities.

In particular, the qualified candidate will:
  • Perform content and thematic analysis of secondary sources, archival data and social media posts
  • Present data cogently and analytically
  • Synthesize relevant literature
  • Conduct a cultural analysis of the role of science fiction in entrepreneurial contexts
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication
  • Help organize research seminars
Qualifications
The applicant must hold a PhD or the equivalent. In assessing applications, particular emphasis will be placed on research potential. In particular, we are seeking a candidate who possesses the following skills and competencies:
  • Qualitative Data Analysis Skills: Proficiency with qualitative approaches such as thematic coding, discourse analysis, and interpretive techniques, including content analysis is a prerequisite. Visual or multimodal analysis is a valuable asset.
  • Significant Research Background: An emerging documented history of published work, particularly in areas like cultural studies, sociology, media studies, anthropology, organization studies or related fields.
  • High Academic Writing Skills: Ability to communicate findings clearly and concisely in English.
  • Software Proficiency: Experience with software like NVivo for qualitative analysis can be beneficial.
  • Collaborative skills: A proven ability of interdisciplinary collaboration will be highly valued.
  • Familiarity with Science Fiction: Knowledge of the genre will be an asset.
  • Quantitative Data Analysis Skills: Are not a prerequisite but may be advantageous.

The Postdoc is a non-tenured position for 12 months. Starting date 1st of February 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.
To fulfill the research requirements of the position, the applicant chosen is expected to be physically present on a regular basis and actively participate in the teaching and research activities of the Department.

The applicant must have professional proficiency in English (written and spoken).

Recruitment procedure
The Recruitment Committee will shortlist minimum two applicants; when possible five or more applicants will be shortlisted. The shortlisted applicants will be assessed by the Assessment Committee. All applicants will be notified of their status in the recruitment process shortly after the application deadline.

The applicants selected for assessment will be notified about the composition of the Assessment Committee and later in the process about the result of the assessment.
