BEMÆRK: Ansøgningsfristen er overskredet

We hereby invite applicants for a PhD fellowship on the relation between climate change and water quality as investigated using machine learning. The fellowship is offered under a research project named Effects of Climate Change on Geogenic Compunds in Groundwater (CHANGE), financed by Geocenter Denmark, and will be carried out in close collaboration between the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) and IGN at University of Copenhagen.

Start date is 1 November 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The project
To secure clean water for future generations, knowledge of the influence of climate change on groundwater quality is needed. Though there is a general perception that climate change affects groundwater quality, the concrete impacts are yet unknown. With this project we aim at breaking new grounds to address this knowledge gap by generating new process understanding on how climate change, through altering groundwater recharge and temperature, affects groundwater quality.

Specifically the project will use state-of-the-art machine learning models to:
1. Explain the spatial distribution of basic chemical properties and geogenic compounds in groundwater at national scale in Denmark.
2. Identify temporal changes in groundwater quality in Denmark and the governing factors, i.e. climate change and/or aquifer overexploitation.
3. Investigate spatio-temporal changes of basic chemical properties and geogenic compounds in groundwater in Tamil Nadu, India.

The analysis will be based on time series of 30 years of comprehensive groundwater quality data and other environmental datasets, including climate, geology, hydrogeology, topography, land use, and soil type. All data are available from the Danish national borehole database JUPITER, and from the national hydrogeological model, both of which are maintained by GEUS. Predictive models will be developed under these data-rich conditions in Denmark. Their potential for global upscaling will be assessed by transferring the developed methods to India, a country with geological and climate conditions being very different from Danish conditions.

Who are we looking for?
We are looking for candidates within a MSc degree in inorganic hydrogeochemistry, hydrogeology or related fields.

Applicants may likely have some experience with large datasets and geodatabases. Additionally, it is preferred to have experience in machine learning, programming languages such as Python or Matlab, and/or in geostatistical analysis. We also appreciate experience with publishing peer-reviewed scientific papers.

It is required that the candidate spends jointly up to six months during PhD programme at the partner institutions in Switzerland and India. It is also important to have excellent written and oral communication skills in English.

Our group and research – and what do we offer?
The PhD research will be carried out jointly between the Water Resources Research Group in the Geology Section of IGN, and the Department of Geochemistry and Department of Hydrology at GEUS. The Geology Section and GEUS share address in Copenhagen.

Furthermore, the project will be conducted in collaboration with Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (EAWAG) and Institute of Remote Sensing Anna University, Tamil Nadu, India.

The selected candidate will be integrated into a team of researchers working on various aspects of inorganic hydrogeochemistry, hydrogeology, machine learning and remote sensing. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in dynamic and international research environment.

Principal supervisor is associate professor Søren Jessen, IGN, Section of Geology (E-mail: sj@ign.ku.dk, Direct Phone: +45 51 37 06 93). Co-supervisors will be senior researcher Jolanta Kazmierczak (E-mail: jka@geus.dk, Direct Phone: +45 91 33 35 72) from the Department of Geochemistry, GEUS, and senior researcher Julian Koch (E-mail: juko@geus.dk, Direct Phone: +45 91 33 36 16), Department of Hydrology, GEUS.

The PhD programme
The PhD programme consist of a three year full-time study within the framework of the PhD programme. To be eligible for the PhD programme, you must have completed a degree programme, equivalent to a Danish master’s degree (180 ECTS/3 FTE BSc + 120 ECTS/2 FTE MSc) related to the subject area of the project, e.g. inorganic hydrogeochemistry, hydrogeology. For information of eligibility of completed programmes, see General assessments for specific countries and Assessment database.

Terms of employment in the PhD programme
